How to Avoid Foods Made with GMOs

gmo-free-300x275On November 6, 2012 California voters had the chance to make history in the food industry. Alas, the “powers” that be and have been making the rules for food safety won that round but not without paying a big price – Consumer Awareness!

Now more than ever health-seeking people are demanding to know what they spend their money on and what goes in the food on their dinner table.

Although No on CA Prop 37 was won at the polls by the heavy monetary support (over $45 million spent!) from a long list of corporations, their subsidies and their brands/products, consumers are demanding the Right to Know by changing their purchasing habits.

You are in control and can demand safe food by how you spend your money. Boycott the corporations that oppose GMO labeling.

A grassroots network of concerned citizens known as The Center For Food Safety provides guidelines to help you buy “clean” non-GMO foods and avoid foods with GMO ingredients.

The guide offers assistance to avoiding genetically-modified foods. Their top 3 tips are:

1.    Buy “certified organic” products because they are not allowed to contain any GMOs.
2.    Buy from companies that volunteer “Non-GMO” labeling.
3.    Avoid eating foods that are made from the big 4 GMO foods.

Californians, Stop GMO on Nov 6!

Although Monsanto has deep pockets when it comes to keeping Americans in the dark about labeling GMO foods, California now has the opportunity to help defeat the lies and deception of the single most important issues of our time – whether or not we have a Right to Know what’s in our food or if corporations have a right to hide what they’re feeding us and our families.

The conclusion of a shocking new study that focused on the long-term effects of eating Monsanto’s genetically modified corn and consuming trace amounts of Monsanto’s Roundup chemical fertilizer is now public. The study showed that the GMO corn caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage and premature death. See http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/19/gmcrops-safety-idUSL5E8KJAGN20120919.

Eating a GMO-free diet is now the most important change Americans can make for their health. Monsanto’s “Frankenstein” experiment is all about monopolizing the world’s seed and food industry for world dominant control and profit. It has nothing to do with nutrition or health. Monsanto and Dupont are spending tens of millions of dollars to discredit what over 50 industrialized nations know to be true and sway Californians on the ballot initiative known as Proposition 37, which would mandate that all GMO food be labeled. It is imperative for Californians to vote YES on Prop 37 on November 6, 2012.

With Prop 37 passed and GMO labeling required there is the possibility that Monsanto will remove their “foods” from the marketplace as they did in Europe, making our food supplies safer. Health-seeking Americans concerned about the risks and dangers of the world’s most bizarre living scientific experiment ever imposed on humans have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the current and coming generations.

3 Organic Myths

Myth #1: Organic food is too expensive.

Fact: In general, organic food costs more than conventional food because of the laborious and time-intensive systems used by the typically smaller organic farms. You may find that the benefits of organic agriculture off-set this additional cost. At the same time, there are ways to purchase organic while sticking to your budget. Consider the real cost when questioning the price of organic:

  • The price of conventional food does not reflect the cost of environmental damage that we dearly pay for.
  • Eating contaminated food from conventional sources creates disease and illness for which the cost is great.
  • The price of organic food reflects the true cost of growing because organic farmers don’t receive federal subsidies from tax dollars.

Myth #2: Eating organic food is the same as eating natural food.

Fact: Natural foods do not contain additives or preservatives, but they may contain ingredients that have been grown with pesticides or are genetically modified (GMO). In other words, the ingredients in the ingredient panel will look familiar, but they have not been produced organically. Natural foods are not regulated and do not meet the same criteria that organic foods do. They are considered conventionally grown.

Myth #3: Organic food looks as good as conventional food.

Fact: Organically grown produce may look less than its perfect conventional counterpart, but it is free of the real danger to your health – toxins. In fact, deriving the health benefits of eating organically grown and avoiding contaminated conventional food (inc. “natural”) makes organic look even better.

Why Organic Certification Matters

earthinhandsIt’s nearly impossible to watch news or socialize on Facebook without seeing stories about the fragile condition of our planet. Many years of industrial waste and irresponsible management of Earth’s resources have led to major issues with pollution, toxic waste and health.

How do we as caretakers of our own bodies deal with the task of getting or staying healthy? An aware person can’t separate the personal health dilemma from our environmental dilemma.

Organic certification not only gives a choice for better quality food, it is our main  link to preserving our planet. After all, if the food that gives us nourishment is polluted from the environment, what hope do we have of living a healthy life?

Organically-grown food is real food that provides nutrition vital to good health. Non-organically grown food can look and taste real but it is not. It can be manipulated with foreign DNA (GMO) and it can contain dangerous carcinogens and other toxins.

How can you tell if food is real or not? Read the label and follow this chart. It offers a bit of humor in addition to a valuable guide.
